Six year old Keralite girl was admitted in November 2016 at Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College Hospital. She had speech delay, frequent & profuse salivation, delayed milestones and learning disability. She was living in the middle east and had undergone a surgery for cleft palate earlier. Her diagnosis was sahaja vatavyadhi, which is an umbrella term for a group of disorders.
She was prescribed internally, Drakshadi kashayam & Manasamitra vatakam. Kalyanavaleha choornam was frequently applied on the toungue as pratisaranam to improve speech and to reduce profuse salivation. Abhyangam with Dhanwantharam thailam & thalam
with Ksheerabala thailam and Kachooradi choornam was the initial treatment given for 3 days. Subsequently, Sirodhara with Ksheerabala oil was posted for next 21 days. Even after 7 or 14 days, the Dhara does not seem to make any influence on the symptoms even in the salivation of the patient.
Moordha thailams are expected to increase secretions, especially those in the head region as understood from the description of its Samyak lakshana. The features of its accomplishment are Vaktra-Nasikotklesam (increase of salivary and nasal secretions). In this case, thaila dhara on head did not make salivation worse, in spite of its Kapha increasing and Vata reducing potency.
On the 14th day of Sirodhara, Pippalyadi thaila at a dose of 15 ml as Matravasti was posted so as to find out its Upasayam. Subsequently for next 7 days, Sashtika Pinda Sweda was performed along
with remaining 7 Matravasties and was discharged from hospital there
after.
Subsequently for next 7 days, Sashtika Pinda Sweda was performed along with remaining 7 Matravasties and was discharged from hospital there after.Surprisingly, in the same evening after the Matravasti has started, the salivation started reducing. Hence after 2 days of trial, it was decided to continue Matravasti every day for the next 14 days. After 7 more days, that is at the completion of 21 days of Sirodhara, it was stopped. Subsequently for next 7 days, Sashtika Pinda Sweda was performed along with remaining 7 Matravasties and was discharged from hospital there after.
Vata is the stimulator for all activities including secretory functions. The Vata Kopa has lead to hyper secretion of Saliva. Matravasti reduced Vata Kopa, which subsequently reduced the stimulation for salivary secretions.
